Many of you know I was diagnosed with Sjögren's Disease at age 20 after a decade of health issues including multiple joint surgeries, a feeding tube, and port for daily IV fluids. Sjögren's Foundation is very important and working on both cutting down diagnosis time and increasing treatment options.
The reason diagnosis was so important was because it could help guild my treatment especially falling in to the 30% of Sjögren's Disease patients that had organ involvement. Even thought is the second most common rheumatic condition it only has one FDA approved treatments. In the last few years the Sjögren's Foundation has been releasing treatment guidelines. These both help rheumatologists treat Sjögren's better and helps patients get insurance coverage for treatments.
In 2017 it took 3 months to go through to the highest level of appear and finally get Rituxan covered (a mononuclear antibody treatment). In 2021 it amazingly only took a week for my rheumatologist to get IV Immunoglobulins covered (IVIg is made by combining immunoglobulins from donated blood so please donate blood!).
Also this year my rheumatologist is going to be the Rheumatologist for 'Ask the Expert.' I am super lucky to live near a Sjögren's center and have such a caring doctor on my team!
Please join me in my efforts to support the Sjögren's Foundation!
